LAST week's fascinating reprint of John Bailey's article about the previous parish church was timely since the bells at St John's are in need of urgent restoration likely to cost around £30,000. I understand that at least one of the bells dates back to the 15th century and previously hung in the church that was demolished in 1823. This bell - and probably some of the others - is one of Weston's oldest antiques and should be preserved as such.A member of the bellringers came to a town council policy and resources meeting in December to request a grant and at a later meeting overturned a decision made by the grants committee to donate £1,000 towards the cost.I like to think there are a significant number of people in Weston of all faiths or no faiths who would like to see the bells and their hangings saved for future generations.
