I READ in the Somerset edition with increasing amazement Julius Herrstein's suggestion that 'The Holy Grail could be buried underneath All Saints, Wrington'! Either he has been reading too much Dan Brown or he is writing tongue-in-cheek! Poor Richard Whiting was Abbot of Glastonbury, one of the wealthiest abbeys in England, at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries. The treasures of that abbey would be far more than 'a few gold trinkets'. It was also rich in legends, including that of being the burial place of King Arthur, and would have had many so-called sacred relics. Because Richard Whiting was born in Wrington, it was decided quite recently, at the time of the Rev Derek Hooper, to dedicated a small chapel to his memory. Those who have read the Dan Brown adventure story, will know that the 'grail' is finally revealed as 'Le sang royale' - the blood line leading from the marriage of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, not a vessel. Incidentally, the light, which Mr Herrstein claims could mark the site where it is hidden, is in fact an ambry light, indicating that the Sacrament is reserved in the church. Lights such as this are found in every CofE and Roman Catholic Church in the country so the fragments of the Grail must be spread very fine indeed. Those who visit Wrington will find a delightful village and a beautiful church, but not the grail.MS E IRVING - Church Walk, Wrington
