EVERY now and again in the Mercury office, someone will tell us where they live and we can barely conceal a snigger. We thought we would take a look through our patch and scour out some of the weirdest and most amusing place names we could find. Enjoy!
Velvet Bottom, Cheddar
This is actually a nature reserve. It probably has some lovely places to sit.
Pudding Pie Lane, Langford
This delicious and fattening street is actually where the doctors surgery is.
Butt’s Batch, Wrington
Yes, we are very immature. But the image of a big batch of butts made us smile.
Dag Hole, Cheddar
It turns out Cheddar is full of these little gems, no one knows what it means, but it sounds good if you shout it across the room.
Leekbeds Lane, West Huntspill
We’re not sure if this lane used to be a very large allotment which only grew leeks, but we like to think so.
Nunney Close, Burnham-on-Sea
Again, although we don’t know where this street got its name from, we like to think someone saw a line of nuns and thought ‘this streets a bit nunney’.
Flamingo Crescent, Worle
Not the most unusual of the names on the list, but delightfully ostentatious. Especially compared to neighbouring streets – finch, tawny… and then a flamingo.
Hind Pits, Shipham
A lovely combination, which really speaks for itself.
Rivendell, Worle
One for the geeks among us. Some of you may know Rivendell is the place where Elves live in JRR Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings saga. Didn’t realise it was on our mailing list.
Scott’s Hole Drove, Cheddar
No one knows who Scott is, but this sounds painful.
