THE possibility of a tidal barrage from Brean Down to South Wales is looming much larger. Whatever local feeling may be about this, such is its potential national importance I doubt whether local politicians and residents will have much effect on that decision. If it does go ahead, the impact on this town could be little or major, depending on what decisions are made here in the very near future. The barrage may well include both road and rail links with about a 20-minute transit period. As the link terminates at Brean this could mean most new traffic could bypass Weston, presumably with new links forged to the M5 and the main railway line. The town could 'keep its head down' and hope it could be ignored.Conversely it could be a major opportunity for us to become a thriving business and leisure centre being at a pivitol point between Wales and the South West. If the barrage is to be a reality perhaps we should therefore make the most of the opportunities it presents. To do so however, the council and business representatives need to start planning, marketing and developing new projects as soon as the barrage is approved - just as London is preparing for the Olympics in six years time. It could be a great opportunity for us all to have an input into a revitalised Weston and really put us 'on the map'.A K ChapmanVia e-mail
