FOR almost half a century and over thousands of work hours I have researched the social and practical history of Weston with pleasure, and have learned enough about the old and long gone parishioners to make them feel like old friends. Some of them were my ancestors anyway!I used to enjoy slipping into the seat in St John's Churchyard of a summer's morning just for a 10 minute rest and to recall some of the tales I'd heard. This is why I feel justified in expressing anger and disappointment at finding the burial ground turned into a large crater created by a mechanical digger and drills that helped to destroy the last resting place of some of my friends and family.Last year the Bath and Wells' authorities sat on their hands whilst North Somerset's official vandal squad smashed people's gravestones for pseudo 'health and safety' reasons. This year they are digging up my ancestors for an extension.Well to hell with that and with this modern pragmatic Christianity that allows economics to rule morality. On behalf of my silent constituents a curse on all who dig them up and I hope your church falls down!A happy Christmas to (almost) everyone else.BRIAN AUSTINAlma Street, Weston
