THE Weston & Somerset Mercury has received some unfair criticism for the copy about the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. The media release, which mentioned that the film Brassed Off catapulted the band to world-wide recognition, was compiled from information provided by them and was approved by the show producers prior to being published.Although the band were immensely successful prior to the 1992 film, the film served to bring them to the attention of a wider audience and enabled them to perform overseas and recorded a chart-topping CD. As to giving them their full name, UK Coal are the band's sponsors and was only added to the band's title in 2001. Traditionally they have been and are still known as the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.CHRIS RADFORD - Playhouse & Winter Gardens, Weston
