A RECENT fascinating reprint of John Bailey's article about the previous parish church was timely since the bells at St John's are in need of urgent restoration likely to cost around £30,000. I understand that at least one of the bells dates back to the 15th century and previously hung in the church that was demolished in 1823. This bell - and probably some of the others - is one of Weston's oldest treasures and should be preserved as such. A member of the bellringers came to a Town Council policy and resources meeting in December to request a grant towards the cost of renovation. I am ashamed to report that this was only supported by me, one of my Conservative colleagues and a Lib Dem member who could not vote as he attends St John's. The rest voted against any grant and, at a later meeting, overturned a decision made by the Grants Committee to donate £1,000 towards the cost.I like to think there is a significant number of people in Weston of all faiths or no faith who would like to see the bells and their hangings saved for future generations. If so, they can send contributions to Joseph Beaumont, 20 Stodleigh Close, Worle, BS22 7QB. Cheques should be made payable to St John's Bells Fund.CLLR JOHN LEY-MORGAN - Elmsleigh Road, Weston
