IT seems that even before the ink has dried on the Tropicana deal, the council is at it again, stripping the town's cupboards of valuable 'silverware' by flogging off our precious libraries, community halls, the Playhouse and the Winter Gardens. Is there anything else of our community assets they can give away? Perhaps this is yet another case of get me out of here, I'm a councillor. It was with some amusement that we read in the same issue of the Mercury that dog walkers may soon have to keep off parts of Weston beach all year round or face up to a £1,000 fine, subject to public consultation of course. Where have we heard this before? For whatever reason, seven councillors decided to abstain from voting on the Tropicana issue at the full council meeting. Six councillors decided to leave the chamber at this critical moment, thereby failing to vote. Admittedly, there were also six apologies for absence. Had those missing and the abstainers together bothered to cast their votes (their moral obligation as elected councillors) the votes for and against could have been different. Why are these representatives of the community shirking their responsibilities? Irresponsibility comes to mind. Do you really want this lot to remain in office? Do not let apathy reign. It's time for a change. Vote accordingly in May's election.DEREK A STANLEY - Castle Hill, Banwell
