I READ with incredulity in the Weston & Somerset Mercury dated August 14, the quote from Wessex Water that it plans to keep increases in line with inflation between 2010 and 2015, because it is 'the most efficient water company in the UK'.What a bigoted and arrogant statement to make. However, if you look at the poor performances of some of the other water companies, it does not have to be that efficient to make the claim.Wessex Water is only able to make such a claim because it has enjoyed inflation busting increases over the last decade at least. It has a monopoly and seems to do what it likes with OFWAT's blessing. It has the nerve to refer to the public as customers. A customer is someone who has a choice of supplier. We do not have a choice and are therefore captive consumers. So why, as it has a monopoly, is Wessex Water advertising on television, wasting money that could be better used tracking down and stopping leaks in it's system?Of course water companies should make a profit but every penny should be reinvested in the system and not squandered on needless and senseless television advertising campaigns, paying large dividends to shareholders.Water is vital to us all, without it we cannot exist and its supply should not be exploited.M A G GOWAN - Southdown, Weston
