1885 SAW the completion of the sea front scheme. The sea wall, promenade and road made Weston one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. No other project before or since has done more for the development of Weston. At that time, the population was a mere 13,000 people and the income to the Town Hall was just £500 per year. Yet the Town Commissioners were able to develop the entire sea front from the Sanatorium to the Old Pier at a cost of £30,000 or the equivalent of 60 years rateable income! Fast forward 121 years and we now have Cllr Crockford-Hawley single handedly trying to destroy that same promenade and bury Weston once and for all with his own version of the Berlin Wall. We should not allow him to get away with it. If we do, we will not only be failing ourselves but also those wonderful people who, more than 120 years ago, created something practical yet beautiful for all Westonians and visitors to enjoy. The proposed scheme is unsightly and would finally destroy what is left of Weston's tourism. Not only that, it will take away a wonderful leisure space from all Westonians. At £7million the scheme has been chosen simply on cost without any regard for what will happen to Weston as a result of this monstrosity. We need to make planners and councillors, particularly Mr Crockford-Hawley, aware that we will never accept the spoiling of our sea front with their cut-price scheme. We want a barrage or a marina or at least a wall that is retractable. We don't want £7million worth of concrete dumped on our sea front.NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
