TROPICANA saga: Deadline - Definition: A time or date by which a job or task must be completed. It certainly does not mean extension! More worryingly it was quoted as being the 'first deadline' passed. How many more can we expect? Excuse the sarcasm, but I feel it is fully justified where our council is concerned. Do they have any intention of letting this project come to fruition? They are elected to serve the people of Weston, but are failing dismally to listen time and again to their electorate. Is there a hidden agenda somewhere; otherwise why all these constant delaying tactics? We've already waited over four years and our patience is being tried to the limit. The likes of Richard Nightingale should have been given the contract, as we would probably have a pool by now, or certainly the makings of one. As we are witnessing at present, our weather is becoming more extreme, with longer and hotter spells of sunshine. Weston needs a swimming pool now - not in a further three, or four years time. Forget the hotel and bowling alley, etc. As readers have pointed out on more than one occasion, we don't need them! We need a large, combined indoor and outdoor pool, with a decent swimming area, fun pool, whirlpools, wave machines, flumes, chutes, etc. It should occupy the entire space of the existing Tropicana and possibly more. The complex has to be large enough to cater adequately for hundreds of people, not dozens. The town might then start attracting back holidaymakers, who would maybe stay for longer than a day. Our main concern should be the fact that the pool is not seen as the major aspect of this development and could end up the size of a postage stamp, or worse still, as someone pointed out - solely for the residents of the hotel! Our local papers report that kids are running riot in the area. Weston is still expanding significantly, but there is nowhere to go and nothing for our youngsters to do. Their energy needs to be channelled somewhere and a state of the art swimming pool would be a start - something Weston could be proud of, because at the moment we have absolutely nothing and should be ashamed to admit this. The provision of substantial community and leisure facilities should be made compulsory with every large house-building scheme that is granted planning permission. There has to be some action, on someone's part as soon as possible in providing this pool for the town. If the right people had been approached in the first place, it wouldn't have been too much to ask. Now I'm not so sure. The councillors should Boot Henry Out and make something happen now before today's teenagers are drawing their pensions!JULIE POWER - Exeter Road, Weston
