I HAVE to express my surprise at the views expressed by your anonymous contributor last week who dared you to print their contribution. It was obvious from the content of the letter that this individual has links to the education service at a senior level within North Somerset Council yet they seemed to be suggesting that the facts surrounding this serious issue regarding the misuse of taxpayers' money should have been withheld from your readers. Views more suited to the days of the Soviet Union. What sort of example does this send out to the young people being educated by the authority? I am sure these opinions are not held by the majority of hard working and dedicated teaching professionals with our schools but it does raise questions as to the motives and principles of the few. The matters that I raised with North Somerset which led to the disciplinary action being taken against the director for Children's Services were serious breaches of the council's own regulations. Without the adherence to rules we have anarchy. The only point I would agree with the contributor over is that there is much more that has not yet been published.I believe your readers have a right to hear the full story regarding these offences. I have therefore written to the council's external auditors, Robson Rhodes, asking that they investigate further and produce a Public Interest Report so that all residents can see the facts and can then reach their own conclusions. I have also asked them to assist in the recovery of the payments which were made to staff against the advice of the council's HR Department. In the meantime, could I issue a dare to your contributor to reveal their name, so the public then has the opportunity to challenge them directly over the opinions they have expressed?CLLR MIKE ROENorth Somerset Council
