Why do we keep piling the pressure?

I LIKE young people and your Youth Matters page is a great idea.I would like to comment on the RU doin' it? project initiated by the Sex Relationship Education Campaign.RU doin' what? It doesn't specify. Young people are being asked to send in videos shouting "I'm doin' it!"Sex, presumably. Youth - you're doin' sex, and if you aren't, you're strange. Why, oh why, do we keep piling the pressure on our young people? What is 'doin' it' doing for our society? How many youngsters are broken-hearted or depressed because they started 'doin' sex far too young? Our society has become sex-obsessed, yet more and more people are living alone because of relationship breakdowns. We spend millions of pounds promoting condoms for our young. We tell them "get doin' it" but "be safe, use a condom".So why are we still getting so many teen pregnancies? Why are rates of sexually transmitted diseases sky-rocketing? Why are we aborting millions of babies? One big problem that gets hardly any publicity is the fact that condoms have a huge failure rate. Some people don't seem to want our young people to know that, but it is well researched that condoms fail 15-20 per cent of the time with teens. They may be too drunk, too careless, or whatever, but condoms don't always keep you from pregnancy or disease. And they certainly have no power to protect your emotions.Marriage used to be sacred. It worked well for our society. It was certainly a lot better than what we have today. My message to teens is: save yourself a lot of grief. Don't give in to the pressure to be 'doin' it'. You can enjoy your teenage years without the worries of pregnancy, emotional upsets or disease. There are plenty of teens out there who aren't 'doin' it'; who've thought through the issues, and they'll be glad to meet someone special like you.JANET BROWN - Cornwallis Avenue, Weston
