After the reassurance that Urban Splash was buying Birnbeck Pier I had hoped that such a monument to Victorian ingenuity would be saved and restored to a semblance of its glorious self. I was inevitably horrified to read that it could actually fall into the sea at any given time which, although not altogether unexpected after our recent storms, would be a total disaster. If North Somerset Council is so concerned about this deterioration why has nothing been done? Is there nothing that anyone can do? As a mere mortal in no position to be able to do more than highlight the cause in my local paper, I am more or less impotent. However, I would strongly urge the council to please do everything possible to avoid the inevitable. Once lost this will NEVER be regained. What an insult to Victorian genius and yet another nail in Weston's architectural coffin.MS J M MASSA - Bristol Road Lower, Weston
