I COULDN'T agree more with last week's letter writer, 'Causing an even longer traffic queue'. I have an office in the Boulevard, Weston, and have been watching the changes in the road layout with mounting incredulity. These works must be costing thousands of pounds but to achieve what? I am not aware there were any problems for vehicles or pedestrians so what is the gain?Today, Monday, I saw exactly the same scenario described in last week's letter. Two cars travelling westward were unable to turn into Victoria Quadrant because of a line of traffic going eastwards. The lights changed back to red and they and the line of cars behind them were left to wait for the lights' sequence to be repeated. Previously the cars going straight ahead would have been able to undertake and go on their way without interruption. The Boulevard is also used frequently by the Fire Service - possibly as often as once a week. How the fire engines are going to negotiate the new arrangements will have to be seen but were the emergency services consulted ?The long-suffering ratepayer is having to shell out yet again for so-called road improvements that can only be described as anti-car. The traffic lights at the top of Oxford Street is another prime example - as is the exit from Uphill onto Uphill Road North where two cars wanting to turn right into a line of traffic hold up any other vehicle behind them wanting to turn left into an empty road. Previous to this 'improvement' traffic always moved freely at this junction. In the meanwhile, the road surface in Uphill Road South, at the entrance to Hutton, and at various other locations remain an absolute disgrace with no sign that they will receive any attention in the near future. If North Somerset Council wanted to spend money in the Boulevard they should have addressed the gigantic puddles that are created every time we have a shower of rain. In this respect, The Boulevard looks worst than a Third World country, and I know one of them quite well!Who are these faceless officers who spend our hard-earned money so wantonly? And what sort of salaries does their expertise command for them?COUNCILLOR JOHN LEY-MORGAN - Broadoak & Uphill Ward, Weston Town Council
