I WISH to thank our parish council and clerk for making it possible to continue opening our lovely house and gardens to the general public in aid of charity. Dennis and I accept with hindsight that mistakes were made. However, with the guidance and support of the clerk and council, we are able to rectify these problems. They have put us in touch with the National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust, which automatically allows us to open the house for 12 days a year and to open the gardens several times a month. Also, by putting us in contact with Sedgemoor Council's Planning Department, we have discovered that by removing the offensive word 'museum' and substituting 'Frankie Howerd's House' we can overcome certain bureaucracy! Also, the Highways Agency have been an enormous help regarding road signage, etc.We hope this sends a positive message to anyone planning to stage charitable works in our area for the community, and that it is worth battling on through the red tape to achieve their goals.CHRISTOPHER BYRNE - Webbington Road, Cross
