MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for a crossing to be installed to keep young children safe as they travel to and from two Nailsea primary schools.Parents say there have been countless near misses as pupils of Grove Junior and Hannah More Infant Schools cross Whiteoak Way.They are also concerned about the youngsters who have to negotiate the main road to get to Grove Sports Ground, a playgroup at its social club and following after-school activities.A petition featuring 1,000 signatures, including Woodspring MP Dr Liam Fox's, has been lodged with North Somerset Council, calling for a crossing to be installed outside the schools. But campaigners are still urging residents, who support their plea, to add their names to the document, which they can do so at either of the schools.Shaun Beaumont, of Shaftesbury Close, whose stepson, Hayden, attends Grove Junior School, delivered the petition to the district council. He said: "A crossing patrol person sees pupils across the road three days a week, but not on the other two days, following after-school activities or at weekends."There have been countless near misses, and with around 550 children at the schools alone, there is huge potential for disaster. It's only a matter of time before a child is injured."North Somerset Council's policy seems to be to wait for an accident to happen before installing a crossing, but as parents, relatives and friends of the children who could be injured, we're not prepared to."A spokesman for North Somerset Council said: "We have received a petition calling for a crossing outside Grove Junior and Hannah More Infant Schools and a report is being compiled for North Somerset Council's executive member for strategic planning and transport, Cllr John Crockford-Hawley.
