WORK to build a £110,000 play area will begin later this year with a skating zone, bike track, climbing net and zip wire all part of the winning design.

People living in St Georges and North Worle were asked what they wanted to see installed in the space at Walford Avenue and now a final design brief has been decided.

People have had to wait more than six years for the plans to come to fruition, after the original equipment was vandalised.

Disagreements about 106 agreements – deals made between councils and housing developers to improve infrastructure – meant there was a delay in North Somerset Council adopting the land.

But the council took responsibility for the space earlier this year and held extensive consultations with the public, awarding Kompan Ltd the contract to carry out the work.

North Worle councillor Marcia Pepperall, said: “The news the play area is going to happen this year is very exciting. There have been unavoidable delays but at last these have been overcome.”

Plans include a 5.5m-high climbing net with a slide and a zip wire for young children and teenagers to use.

More play equipment and a bike track for toddlers will be added and a picnic area will surround the park.

For teenagers there will be a £50,000 concrete-surfaced skate zone, for which designs are now being completed.

During the consultation period people also requested adult gym equipment and Cllr Pepperall said: “Plans are in the pipeline for some adult gym equipment, possibly in three Worle sites.

“Having tested some of this apparatus abroad, I can’t wait to use it in North Worle.”

The council’s executive member for open spaces Peter Bryant said: “I am delighted this replacement play area is going ahead.

“It will provide a real focal point in the park as well as an exciting play space.

“I am so pleased the local community became actively involved in the consultation process, which helped shape this winning design.”

Work to install the equipment will begin in September and is due to finish in October.
