A SPORTS coach from Portishead has been selected to represent Britain at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Sophie Keen, aged 22, who lives in Down Close has been awarded a place in the British handball team.

"Being in the handball squad is a dream come true for me," said Sophie, a former Gordano School pupil.

"I first started playing handball at Gordano. I then took up basketball and continued to play at university and at national league level."

The selection process started last year in Nottingham and Sheffield culminating in a 10 week intensive training course.

Sophie has since attended training courses in Leipzig, Germany, known for its women's national team and in France where she played her first international game.

She said: "I have been selected with just three other girls to train and play full-time in Denmark in preparation for 2012.

"This is because handball is the Danes' national sport and its facilities, coaches and clubs are outstanding."

Sophie is slightly worried how she will financially support her training and preparation.

She said: "UK Sport allowance is very limited and does not even cover my basic living expenses let alone equipment and necessary travel.

"I am hoping people at home might know of some grant giving trusts, community groups or businesses that will be able to offer some sponsorship.

"I would be so grateful to hear of any help available, however large or small, which may help me to fulfil my dream of representing my country at our home Olympics."
