John Dunn was found dead in a bedsit in The Centre, on January 5, with more than 80 different wounds.
Bristol Crown Court heard how he had been stabbed with broken spirit bottles and beaten after he was given money to buy alcohol but returned empty handed.
Andrew Fuge, aged 45, of Clarendon Road, Richard Evans, aged 54, of Black Lane, Pill, Terence Townsend, aged 51, from Cardiff and Barry Shortt, aged 45, of no fixed abode, deny murdering him.
Wayne Jones, aged 37, of The Centre, has been declared unfit to stand trial for mental health reasons, which means the jury will only be asked to decide whether he took part in the attack, not whether he is guilty of murder.
