A PLACE of worship in Weston has become the latest building to be targeted by lead thieves.

All Saint's Church in All Saints Road had the material stripped from its roof last weekend.

It follows numerous thefts across the district from churches, and even Birnbeck Pier, over the past few months.

Reverend Peter Bolton, who has been the vicar at All Saint's Church for six months, has expressed his disappointment that thieves would cause such destruction.

He said: "A church warden found the damage on Saturday morning and by then the water was leaking through the roof, causing damage below.

"There was enough lead taken to cause a lot of problems. It wasn't just to the roof, there was damage to the cupboards below and everything has had to be cleared out from underneath where the lead was taken from.

"Although we are insured there will still be an excess to pay.

"I would advise any other churches in the area to take advice from their insurers as to how they can avoid this happening. I believe there are ways to do it like painting a special material onto it to identify it as stolen when it is being sold on."

If anyone has any information about the theft at All Saint's Churches, or any of the others in the area, they can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
