A FAMOUS organist and composer from Draycott has named a hymn after the small Somerset village. Barry Rose, aged 73, is a professional musician and works as a freelance composer for the BBC.
A FAMOUS organist and composer from Draycott has named a hymn after the small Somerset village.
Barry Rose, aged 73, is a professional musician and works as a freelance composer for the BBC.
He was asked to write music for three hymns that won a national BBC competition and he named one of them Draycott’.
The Milking Lane resident said: “The hymn isn’t actually about Draycott, but it would be lovely if it could be sung in one of the village church services.
“Whenever I have time and I am in Draycott I play the organ for the Sunday services at St Peter’s Church.”
The hymn has been broadcast on BBC Radio 2 and on regional BBC radio programmes.
Barry, who lives with his wife Elizabeth, has resided in Draycott for 10 years.
The organist and pianist has been choirmaster at St Paul’s Cathedral in London and director of the choir at St Albans Abbey. In 1998 he was given an OBE as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
