TWO youngsters from North Somerset were left fearing for their lives when they were stuck in a freezing cable car for more than six hours on a French mountain. The teenagers were on the second day of a snowboarding trip in Les Deux Alpes when the terrifying drama unfolded and they were forced to abseil to safety.Kay Dale, aged 17, of Hewish and 14-year-old Cam Atkinson, of Congresbury found themselves trapped 3,500m up with nine other people on the highest skiable glacier in France, the D™me de la Lauze.Kay, who attends Churchill Sixth Form, said: "It was really scary being stuck especially with 75mph winds blowing the cable car around."After being stuck for six hours we were finally rescued but it took them an hour to set the equipment up and 11 of us needed to abseil down a rope one by one to safety."I was so petrified, I was actually contemplating jumping out. I knew I would break a leg but felt like I needed to get out."Cam was completely motion sick, he was throwing up but because he couldn't reach the window a man had to lift him."That morning we were completely unaware the weather was going to turn, we asked someone if the training had been cancelled but were not told that it was so we carried on."Two hours later, we were shouted at by this guy who seemed really angry. He was telling us to get down from the mountain and was aggressive in his tone but we didn't know what was going on."We started making our way down the mountain but the ice was hitting us really hard, we just sat down huddling together"When we got in the cable car lift it seemed to stop, I seriously thought the car would fall off, the wait felt so long, I was so scared."The lift had stopped because the wind was so fast it had blown the car 360 degrees around the cable.Cam's mother Adele Atkinson was unaware of the ordeal her son went through until the evening. She said: "I was leaving work when I received a text from Cam explaining what happened."He told me they used their snowboards as shields and they were really cold because their suits were not completely waterproof."The experience doesn't seem to have put him off though, he has been snowboarding since he was little and has taken part in many competitions.
