MESSAGES of support for Weston Tennis Club have been flooding in from neighbouring residents as it continues its struggle for survival. The club, in Neva Road, is facing declining membership following an order forcing it to shut down its floodlights at night after a complaint about light pollution. The instruction, from North Somerset Council, means the club's members cannot use the courts after dusk.It is unclear whether league matches will now be able to go ahead at the venue. The council's planning chief, John Crockford-Hawley, has been in touch with every household in the club's immediate vicinity and has found 'all responses to be in support of the club'.He said: "As leaseholders of the club, Weston College would be entitled to sell the land to the highest bidder. The feeling of residents is that they would rather be living next to a tennis club than a block of flats or wasteland, which could be the situation if the club disappears."One message of support said: "After a hard day's work it's relaxing to sit in the garden and watch the tennis". Cllr Crockford-Hawley held a meeting with senior council officers last week to see if any compromise could be found.Club chairman, Trevor Carter, said: "The situation is worsening each day as the majority of members are not renewing their membership.
