A RARE species of bat has put plans for a new telegraph mast on greenbelt land on hold.Plans for a 12-metre T-Mobile pole at Goblin Coombe Farm in Cleeve have been delayed following concerns from Cleeve Parish Council that the mast would destroy the character of the area and harm protected rare greater horseshoe bats. North Somerset Council has approved the mast, subject to a wildlife survey and landscaping scheme, on the basis of it being 'permitted development', as it is under 15 metres high. It has also decided its siting and appearance is acceptableA spokesman for Cleeve Parish Council said: "We are totally opposed to a mast on this site. It has three public footpaths through it and it is one of the most scenic areas to walk in the village."We believe the compound, mast and associated works will ruin the openness of the area and is an inappropriate development in the green belt."We are also concerned that the greater horseshoe bats in the vicinity may be affected."North Somerset Council says that no development will take place until a wildlife survey has been submitted and approved.
