Supermarket plan 'called in'

A WORLE councillor is asking for a supermarket's planning application to be examined more closely.The Weston & Somerset Mercury reported last week how Sainsbury's in North Worle wants North Somerset Council to allow it to receive deliveries on Sundays and bank holidays from 9am-5.30pm.But Cllr Edward Keating who represents South Worle says he has 'called in' the planning application which means the local authority's west area committee may have to look at it.Earlier this year North Somerset Council refused to let the supermarket in Worle start delivering early on a Sunday morning, for an extra hour each day in the week and for an extra hour on weekday mornings between 5-6.30am. Sainsbury's is appealing against the decision.A spokesman for the supermarket said company bosses are still awaiting the outcome of their original appeal but could not confirm which application would be the preferred option. She said: "Following discussions with the local planning officer about our customers' needs and the deliveries required to meet these needs, we have submitted an additional planning application which takes into account previous concerns raised by local residents and planning committee members. "If passed it would allow us to receive essential deliveries on Sundays and bank holidays from 9am and ultimately enable us to provide a better service to our customers who choose to shop on these days."Minimising disruption to our neighbours is of paramount importance and we are in discussions with our neighbours about our application and any concerns they may have. We are waiting for a decision from the planning inspectorate on our current appeal.
