A BID to secure millions of pounds to spruce up a Weston Park could be under threat.North Somerset Council said it would support the town council in its mission to try to get a £3.2million Heritage Lottery Fund package for Grove Park. But the council's new executive has now ordered a review into whether the local authority should support the scheme.Executive member for strategic planning and economic development, Councillor Elfan Ap-Rees, said at a recent meeting that the previous administration's promise to commit funding to the cause was too risky. The town council wants to transform the area back into its pre-war condition but needs the backing of North Somerset Council because interested parties need to contribute 25 per cent of the cost of the scheme.Cllr Ap-Rees said: "Because of the high risk and cost we are looking at other options."Weston Town Council leader, Cllr Keith Morris, says the town council cannot afford to fund the scheme without North Somerset Council's support but also says he will battle to keep the authority on side.He said: "Because we couldn't afford the work as a town council it would not go ahead without the local authority's support."The lottery people have told us they won't consider giving the money to Grove House alone but it needs to be the park too."But I wouldn't write the scheme off as I will battle to keep it on. I will be raising it with the Conservative group."The lottery cash would be used to renovate Grove House, improve the park's tennis courts and add a cafe to the area.If North Somerset Council commits to helping with the overhaul it would have to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds towards it.
