VILLAGERS in Cross are calling for action to be taken after a boy was knocked down at a notorious crossroads. The youngster was hit while crossing the busy A38 on March 19 at 5.45pm. He was taken to hospital but his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.Residents and parish councillors are now calling on Somerset County Council to do something about the blackspot. The county council previously suggested shutting the crossroads off completely but villagers are against the proposal as they say it would cause havoc for people travelling to and from Axbridge and Cheddar from Cross, making journeys longer and increasing traffic. The council has confirmed it is trying to come up with alternative proposals, although villagers have been told there is not enough money for a roundabout or traffic lights. Compton Bishop Parish Council chairman, Michael Tobin, said: "I sent a letter to the council to inform it about the latest incident and tell it that it puts more pressure on members to get some pedestrian access sorted."We have suggested an island about 50 yards up the hill away from the crossroads so people can cross away from the junction."Six accidents have occurred at the crossroads in the past year, fortunately none have been fatal. The parish council is now waiting to hear back from Somerset County Council about whether an island is feasible.
