THE final remains of a much-loved clergyman were scattered in the sea as a lone bugler played a rendition of The Last Post. The ashes of Reverend Barry Irons were interned into the waters off Birnbeck Pier in Weston from the Atlantic 75 lifeboat which he had blessed on its launch in 2002.Lifeboat member Pete Holder said he was honoured to carry out the internment as Weston Brass musical director Peter Nutt played the moving tune.Rev Iron's last wish was to have his ashes sprinkled as close to his favourite watering hole, the Captain's Cabin pub in Birnbeck Road.More than a dozen friends gathered on the pub's sun terrace overlooking the bay to watch the ceremony on Wednesday evening (July 26).One friend said: "It was a wonderful send-off for Barry and one I am sure he would have appreciated."The body of the 67-year-old former rector at St John the Baptist Church was discovered in his seafront home in Beach Court on June 30.* Pictured: Lifeboat crew member Pete Holder about to scatter the ashes of Reverend Irons as Peter Nutt plays The Last Post.
