A DERELICT rubber factory in Worle is a magnet for youths and should be demolished as soon as possible, according to councillors.Residents living near to the old Fussells factory in Station Road have had enough of youngsters congregating at the dangerous site.Developer McCarthy and Stone wants to take over the site and build 34 one-bed and 12 two-bed self contained sheltered apartments for the elderly along with 10 affordable homes.A planning application is being submitted to North Somerset Council and if it is approved, work is expected to take about one year to complete. But North Somerset councillors for the area, Andy Wright and Sally Tabrett, are pushing for the building to be demolished straight away.Cllr Wright said: "The site has been empty since September and I have been contacted by numerous concerned residents. It is only a matter of time before something goes wrong there or someone gets seriously injured."It is virtually impossible to keep youths out of the site. The stairwells have been taken out to stop them getting into the top part of the building but there is still a mains electricity box in there which covers 50 houses in Worle that cannot be blocked off."All the windows have been smashed and there is broken glass everywhere."Basically it is an industrial site in the middle of a residential area and should be demolished without delay."All the residents want the same thing so they can stop worrying and we will be pushing for action on their behalf.
