SOME of the world's most elite cyclists could soon be pedalling through Cheddar Gorge in a prestigious race.Somerset County Council has managed to persuade organisers of the Tour of Britain to bring the event to the county from 2007 to 2011.Although the exact route is yet to be finalised, project managers are keen for Cheddar Gorge, the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels to form an integral part of the race, which features top riders from around the world.Major businesses have expressed interest in sponsoring the race, which is expected to provide a massive boost to the local economy. The county will be hosting the seventh stage of Britain's biggest cycle race, and it is likely to take place in August and September.Somerset County councillor Paul Buchanan, who is responsible for economic development, said: "The route we decide upon for the Tour of Britain will showcase Somerset's attractions to a huge audience and will bring many new visitors to the county."Even professional class riders would be challenged going up Cheddar Gorge or through the Blackdown Hills."The list of benefits from the tour is almost as large as your imagination. "It's not just about the day of the race itself, there will also be a series of activities leading up to it and after the race."We intend to vary the route each year in order to maximise exposure for all parts of the county.
