WILDLIFE campaigners are calling for better police patrols of Backwell Lake in a bid to stamp out alleged problems with doggers and anti social behaviour. The beauty spot, owned by Wessex Water, is being touted as an 'ideal spot for afterdark activity' on a number of dogging and swinging websites. The lake has also become a night-time meeting place for youths who use the car park as a race track.Only last weekend a car ploughed through railings at the beauty spot.Local wildlife warden and member of Backwell Environment Trust, Dot Baker, said: "A group of us were bat detecting at the lake and we heard a rustle in the bushes."Then a couple came out of the undergrowth, both pulling up their trousers."There are also cars parked up there late into the night which makes one wonder what is going on."We do not approve of this sort of unpleasant activity at our local beauty spot and do not like the fact it is advertised on the internet as a dogging location."Mrs Baker said the lake car park was also used as a meeting place for boy racers and youngsters who meet there, drink and cause mischief.Mrs Baker added: "What we need is more regular police patrols of the lake to stop this sort of anti social behaviour."It is only just off the main road and it would only take officers two minutes to pull in to see if anything untoward was going on. If those people who are causing problems knew it was regularly patrolled, it would act as a real deterrent."Backwell community beat officer PC Greig Difford said the lake was regularly patrolled by police.PC Difford said: "We have not received any calls or complaints about Backwell Lake."The lake gets patrolled on a regular basis and very often passing officers do a drive around the car park when passing.
