SCHOOLS in Highbridge have been attacked, damaged and had property stolen over the last three weeks.Beechfield Infants School and Highbridge Nursery had a shed damaged beyond repair, toys and equipment stolen and a number of windows smashed. Headteacher Sheelagh Aslett said: "The children have found it very difficult to understand why anyone would want to damage their toys and equipment. "We are disappointed that the youngest members of our community are being targeted in this manner."St John's School was also broken into, had equipment stolen and pupils are unable to use the smart board in one of the classrooms. Headteacher David Penney said: "Highbridge is a wonderfully generous and supportive community and it is a shame that the few cause problems for others."I regret that local children in Highbridge are being robbed by actions such as these."The police are now talking to schools in Burnham and Highbridge in a bid to fight crime and improve security. Burnham Sergeant Ian Kennet is working with the schools in the hope of preventing future incidents. He said: "Any money spent on repairing damage caused by criminals cannot be spent on children's education. In addition to extra patrols, we are looking at other security measures."I would ask that the local community support the police and their local schools in helping to stop this from happening and by giving any information that would help catch those responsible."Police have asked residents to contact their neighbourhood police officer PC Starks, or any school staff to report anyone seen on school property out of hours. Anyone with information is urged to contact Burnham and Highbridge police or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
