BANWELL Carnival will be cancelled next year unless more volunteers come forward to help run the event. The week-long festival in July is hugely popular with villagers but its future now hangs in the balance due to a lack of helpers.Banwell Village Hall Committee runs the carnival and puts on activities and entertainment including treasure hunts, a quiz, fashion show and disco, followed by a parade to round off the festivities.Organisers need around 50 people to help set up and organise the event but so far they only have 20 volunteers.Richard Tolmie, vice chairman of Banwell Parish Council and the village hall committee, said: "We want to keep it going. It will be a huge loss if it goes. The village hall committee depends on it to keep the hall ticking over and the event really does bring the village together."All the money raised from the carnival goes back into the village hall to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of the facility. But a lack of volunteers is not the only issue putting people off. The parade has also attracted less floats over the past couple of years due to new insurance requirements. The hall committee is appealing to people to help save the carnival before January when they are due to make a decision over the future of the event. Anyone keen to help save Banwell Carnival can call Richard Tolmie on 01934 820886.
