A DELIVERY driver who sent obscene letters to women inviting them to have sex with him has been told to attend a sex offenders' programme.Stephen Routley, of Quarry Road, Sandford, sent an explicit message to a 73-year-old woman in Winscombe. Another was posted to a young mum in the village who became convinced she was being stalked and fled her home. The 59-year-old was handed a three-year community order and told to attend the Thames Valley Sex Offender programme at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday.Routley, who is married with one son, previously admitted two offences of sending indecent articles by post and asked for four similar offences to be taken into consideration.Edward Knapp, prosecuting, told how the lewd letters were sent anonymously to women over the end of last year and in January this year."The defendant worked as a self-employed delivery driver and the recipients of each of these letters had anonymous letters addressed to them in the post suggesting they engage in sexual activity with the defendant."The first lady is aged 73. She said she found the letter distressing because of its obscene content and went to the police."The other recipient was a young mother who lived at home and thought someone was stalking her. She left the house the day she received the letter," said Mr Knapp. He said the defendant was arrested on January 7 at his home where officers seized similar typed letters found in a filing cabinet and on a floppy disc.He said Routley admitted writing them but could not explain why.Ramin Pakrooh, defending, agreed Routley's actions were mystifying but said he had never been in trouble before. He said Routley was now unemployed and keen to start the sex offenders' programme.Sentencing Routley, Judge Carol Hagen said: "It's always sad when a man of your age who's never been in any sort of trouble comes before the court, particularly for this sort of offence."It's to your credit that you immediately admitted the offences. The remorse and shame you express are entirely genuine and you have some realisation of the effect these letters had on the women who received them.
