THOUSANDS of pounds worth of damage was caused after thieves broke into a former Royal British Legion club.Intruders forced their way into the building in Orchard Street, Weston, over the Bank Holiday weekend.The culprits drank a large quantity of alcohol left in the club after it closed in February before vandalising the premises. Equipment was stolen from the upstairs office and the public telephone was smashed and emptied of cash.Branch secretary Merlin Parrington, who discovered the crime at 9am on Monday, said: "I went to the club and found the back door open. "There was a lot of damage and the thieves had helped themselves to drink from behind the bar. I was staggered."Police crime scene investigation officers spent the whole of Monday and part of Tuesday taking fingerprints and DNA samples from the empty glasses and cigarette butts left strewn around the club.A police spokesman said investigations were continuing.
