THE charge on Kewstoke Toll Road should be brought back to protect the village - according to residents.Kewstoke Parish Council carried out a survey in the village and 95 per cent of residents who responded want the toll reintroduced. They say without it, the volume of traffic travelling through the village has increased. In January, North Somerset Council announced the toll would not be enforced on the road this summer because it was proving too expensive to collect. The council said reintroducing the fee would involve building a new toll booth and changing the road layout to make it safer for someone to stand at the collection point.Councillors decided the amount of money collected each season was not enough to justify the work. But parish council chairman Tony Morris said: "We are not happy about the toll not being on the road and neither are the villagers."We are already noticing a significant increase in traffic and heavier vehicles which is a big disruption in the village."We realise money is the bottom line but think there must be a way to make it work."North Somerset's executive member for strategic planning and transport, Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, said: "I am more than happy to listen and discuss the issue and if the parish council wants I can attend one of its meetings."We also need to consult Weston Town Council to get a balanced view because 90 per cent of the road is in Weston, not Kewstoke."The parish council plans to attend a meeting of North Somerset's strategic planning and economic development policy and scrutiny panel to fight its case.
