A couple who helped build a school in an East African country are appealing for more items they can gift to children.

Ron and Beanie Febrey first visited Tanzania in 1985 to help build classrooms for students.

They were invited back by the local village to build Naalarami Primary School, in Maasai Steppe, which was 'in the middle of nowhere' and 60km from the nearest road.

The duo go back twice every year since and are currently in the village, due to return on Wednesday.

People living in the village are known as Maasai; an indigenous ethnic group in Africa of semi-nomadic people settled in Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The Maasai are among the foremost African ethnic groups due to their distinct traditions, customs and dress.

More than 400 children attend the school and they are all Maasai.

Ron told the Mercury: 'We have had so many success stories from our time in Tanzania; the school we helped to build allowed a Maasai girl to progress to become a fully qualified midwife which is extremely rare for Maassai girls because they only go to school three weeks per month.

'We fly out twice yearly and are always looking to take different items with us to gift to the children.

'Life is very hard on the children and their only way out of it is through education.

'Some of the children have never been out of the village and most walk a long way to school, often more than 8km with no food.

'We try and give them one meal at the school and help as much as we can.'

Weston Football Club has donated footballs and kits to Ron, which will be used by the schoolchildren.

Alex Crowther, the football club's marketing manager, said: 'We're delighted to support Ron with the fantastic work he's undertaking in Tanzania.

'Everyone at Weston AFC is in awe of the impact Ron has made and we look forward to receiving updates about his project.

'We've donated last season's first team footballs and shirts to the school.'
