There is queuing traffic in and around Weston-super-Mare this afternoon (Tuesday) due to resurfacing work on the M5.

Highways England has closed a 200-metre stretch along three of four northbound lanes at the bottom of Tickenham Hill, between junction 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead), to carry out emergency resurfacing work. The northbound entry slip road for junction 20 has also been closed.

This is causing queuing traffic to junction 21 (Weston) while it is also slow moving on the A370 at Somerset Avenue as drivers attempt to join the motorway.

Highways England is warning of 90-minute delays and around eight miles of congestion on the M5 approaching the scene, but hopes the work will be finished around 7-8pm tonight.

Rob Llewellyn, Highways England network operations manager, said: “Surfacing of a section of the carriageway has failed and we are currently working hard to put repairs in place as quickly as possible.

“Unfortunately the closure will have an impact on traffic in the evening peak, and we apologise for any inconvenience.

“The road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so, but in the meantime we advise people to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider alternate routes.”
