The incident occurred between J27 and J26 near Tiverton.
Lanes have reopened on the M5 northbound following a five-car collision this morning.
Traffic was gridlocked on the motorway near Tiverton because of the incident between A361 (Tiverton) and J26 A38 (Wellington).
All three lanes were closed while vehicles were being removed, but police have since confirmed they have since reopened.
However, traffic is still slow-moving.
