50 Plus Club

The club meets every Friday at 2pm in Castle Batch Community Centre, Bishops Avenue, in Worle, for days out and holidays.

Weston Archaeological and Natural History Society

The Newport medieval ship Basque Trader was the subject of the first talk of our new season’s programme for 2016/2017.

We meet at the Victoria Methodist Church Hall, in Station Road.

We welcome all who are interested archaeology and natural history.

Family History Society

Peter de Dulin will talk on ‘from emperor to workhouse’ at Vintage Church Hall (formerly The Purple Sheep Centre) at 7.30pm on September 27.

Entry, including refreshments, is £1.50 for members and £2 for visitors.

Weston Woodturning Circle

The meeting today (Thursday) 7pm at Weston Football Club will see life member John Owen demonstrate how to make wood-turned fruit items.

Two other lathes will be offering tuition to beginners and intermediate level members.

This month the display table will be dedicated to Halloween-themed items.

Visitors who are interested in woodturning are encouraged to join us at our meeting for up to two free meeting visits.

Retirement Fellowship

Today (Thursday) we will be booking for the Cheltenham outing on October 11.

All retired and serving civil servants are welcome to join us on outings and at the coffee mornings on the first and third Thursday of the month, 10am at The Friends Meeting House.

Weston Youth Orchestra

The orchestra’s next concert will be held on October 8 at St Paul’s Church at 7.30pm and will be a musical evening featuring both junior and senior orchestra.

Weston Horticultural Society

The first talk of autumn/winter was on orchids from Howard Burnett. Howard has been growing orchids since 1975 and gave useful advice and answered many questions.

At the next meeting on October 13, St Peter’s Church Hall at 7.30pm Gilly Howard of Moor Plants in Ashcott will be giving a talk entitled ‘growing into moor plants’. There will be a raffle and refreshments and new members are welcome.

Our celebrity speaker this year is Christine Walkden, the popular TV gardener on the BBC One Show and will be held on November 10 at 7.30pm. Admission is £8.50 for members and £9.50 for visitors. Tickets will be on sale at the next meeting at The Trading Hut, Clarke’s Field Allotments, Rectors Way (off Drove Road), any weekend from 9.30am to noon and from Cynthia Filer on 01934 514057.

Oddfellows Friendly Society

A skittles evening is being held by the society on Wednesday at The Woodborough Inn, Winscombe. Tickets cost £8.50, including a buffet.

The event is open to non-members, just come along.

RAFA Weston Branch

We have a busy weekend commencing on Saturday with members collecting in the town centre for the Wings Appeal.

On Sunday members take part in the Battle of Britain church parade and service, followed by an open house at the club.

Come to one of our regular coffee mornings on Wednesdays at Eagle House and get your name down for some of our regular social events. RAFA branches and clubs are renowned for their comradeship and friendly atmosphere and it is not necessary to have served in the Armed Forces to be a member.

There will be a SSAFA representative at the club on a Wednesday at 10.30am until noon.

Draycott Art Club

After a splendid summer of weekly sketching trips the club is back to weekly meetings in the Draycott Memorial Hall, and has space for new members.

The club meets every Thursday and has a varied programme of tutored classes, life drawing, and exciting new ideas to try, suitable for beginners or for the more experienced. The club provides an excellent range of papers, boards, tea, and coffee for those taking part free of charge and non-members are welcome.

The club meets from 10am-1pm and from 2-4pm. Members are free to choose whether they come for the morning, afternoon or for both sessions.

Bleadon Sugarcraft Club

The club welcomes Sue Duggan on September 22 who will be running a cupcake workshop.

Please bring four cupcakes with you; all other items will be provided.

The workshop starts at 7.30pm in Bleadon Village Hall. Visitors are welcome for a fee of £3.50.

RAFA Concert Band

An ensemble from the band entertained guests at the Battle Of Britain dinner and the musicians received an engraved goblet as a memento.

The band’s next concert in Weston will be Music From The Movies, which will be performed at The Blakehay Theatre on October 1; tickets are on sale now.

The band has a few vacancies for competent players, including a percussionist.

WorleWind Band

The band finished the summer season in style at Worle Community Festival.

Games, bouncy castles and delicious cream teas added to the lively atmosphere to make this lovely event a roaring success.

The band’s next engagement will be a Harvest Gala Concert at St Martin’s Church in Worle on October 8.
