Members enjoyed having lunch at Brewers Fayre on Weston seafront. Ken Crane was welcomed to give a PowerPoint presentation of Haynes International Motor Museum.

Ken has spent much of his time at the museum and gave an enjoyable, informative, interesting and often nostalgic talk.

Members enjoyed the picnic in the park albeit in the Emmanuel Church hall because of inclement weather.

About 35 members welcomed Dr Sandra Green, consultant rheumatologist at Weston General Hospital and group adviser, for our annual medical update.

Dr Green gave an interesting and informative talk, with lots of audience participation, during which she reminded members of the key factors in maintaining bone health including taking their medication as directed, eating a varied healthy diet, getting out in the sunshine and participating in weight-bearing exercise, plus activities such as tai chi that aid balance and co-ordination.

The next meeting is on September 8 at 6.30pm in the lecture theatre of The Academy at Weston General Hospital. Call 01934 415096 for details.

Weston Brass

Last week Weston Brass performed in Blake Gardens, Bridgwater. Although not a big park it always produces an enthusiastic audience who seem to enjoy the wide ranging programme.

West Woodspring Inner Wheel

Club members were out in force last Thursday providing help and support to Weston Rotary Club at their 20th annual charity golf tournament.

President Rose and Carol Schubert organised the refreshment tent on the seventh tee at Weston Golf Club, where Inner Wheel ladies rotated throughout the day, producing nearly 200 bacon butties by the end of the competition.

Inner Wheel members also manned the reception desk, booking in teams, selling raffle tickets and generally encouraging the golfers to part with their money, all in aid of charity and local good causes.

The Friends of Burnham Hospital

On June 6, Tony Deahl decided that he had served his time and stepped down as chairman of the Friends of Burnham Hospital.

Tony served on the committee for more than 30 years and has been chairman for 20 years. During that time he has seen many changes to the hospital.

In recognition of his long service we invited Tony and Wendy, his wife, to the hospital so that we could present a gift to him.

At the same time we also recognised that Wendy had put up with him disappearing to sort out various requests and also served her time running the tea tent at fetes for the past 10 years.

We wish them both well for the future. New chairman Bernard Spilsbury presented the gift.
