Wrington Vale Inner Wheel

A fabulous French lunch was held on a glorious day in the garden of Mr and Mrs Alvis.

This was attended by 100 guests and members who dined on ample quantities of delicious pate, cheese, tarts and French wine.

The event was ably supported by rotary members, who ran the bar.

It was great day in a lovely garden in aid of Arthritis Care UK.

SSAFA

As the oldest and largest national charity providing support to our armed forces and their families, we are always looking for help by way of fundraising, case workers and, currently, a secretary.

We meet every Wednesday at the RAFA headquarters, Eagle House, Alexandra Parade, from 10.30am to noon. For details call 01934 644024 or out of hours call 08458 500510.

We look forward to hearing from anyone who might need our help or who is interested in joining the team. The secretary’s job would need someone familiar with computers, but, although desirable, a service background in not a requirement, just someone keen to further our work.

Weston Friends Group of Children’s Hospice South West

We would like to thank all those who supported the open garden event at the home of Sue and Rod Thomas.

The day went perfectly, with good weather and lots of visitors coming to view the award-winning garden. The day ended by making more than £346.

A big thank you to Sue and Rod for all their help and generosity in allowing visitors access to their very interesting garden.

Weston Rotary Club

The annual charity golf day was held at Weston Golf Club, with 43 competing. The winners, who had the best of the weather early in the day, were the BWOC team.

When all the money is received, more than £10,000 will have been made on the day, making over £185,000 raised for charity by this event since 1997.

President John presented cheques of £1,200 each to Winter Warmth, SSAFA Forces Help and Western Active Stroke Group. The balance will be donated to other mainly local charities as needs arise.

All the tees and greens were fully sponsored and we would like to thank all the players and local businesses and organisations for their support in making this day so successful and of course the members of Weston Rotary Club and West Woodspring Inner Wheel for all the hard work in organising and running the event.

Wrington Vale Rotary Club

The club welcomed the founder of the SHIVA Charity operating in Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Bob Uddington, a retired headteacher told us on his retirement his vision was to help with the education of children in Sri Lanka. He explained how his efforts were tragically wrecked by the 2004 tsunami which destroyed a nursery school with the loss of many children.

With the aid of donors including rotary clubs and the Bristol Post he rebuilt the school to a much higher standard than previously existed and then turned his expertise to schools in Nepal. He was instrumental in establishing many schools, with particular emphasis on meeting education needs.

Tragically the earthquake in April 2015 destroyed many schools so, via Bob’s enthusiasm and experience of the area, he is now leading a campaign to raise money to purchase an earth brick-making machine to rebuild homes and schools in the region.

WorleWind Band

The band welcomed its youngest ever member Tessa Ractliffe, aged 11.

Tessa has been playing the saxophone for just over two years and is currently studying for her grade six exam.

On the other end of the spectrum, our oldest member, Ken Heeney who is 84 years young, took up playing the tuba after he retired, proving that it’s never too late to learn something new.

Both can be seen in action in Grove Park on August 21.
