Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA)

The club is holding a horse racing night on Saturday and will then be serving roast lunch on August 26.

Come to one of our regular coffee mornings on a Wednesday to find out about becoming a member and supporting the association and the club.

SSAFA have a representative at the club on Wednesdays at 10.30am to noon.

The club recently held its 14th anniversary dinner, during which it was pleased to present Heather Hamilton with the club presidential certificate of merit.

Heather has been with the RAFA club from the beginning and has worked away quietly and efficiently in the background, so members presented her with the award.

Wrington Vale Rotary

The club hosted Ruth Thomas, a trained engineer, who spoke about the organisation Soroptimist International which was founded in 1921 in California for business and professional women.

In 2012, there were 3,727 projects undertaken globally, affecting 110,000 lives, with an emphasis on educate, empower and enable.

The Weston club was established in 1939 and among the many activities its members participate in are helping with the reading for young girls and encouraging their interest in science as well as mathematics, while for the blind, undertaking reading to them.

For most attendees, knowledge about the Soroptimist organisation had been nil but Ruth imparted an understanding with enthusiasm and passion which was very warmly received.

West Woodspring Inner Wheel

Instead of members holding their monthly meeting at Weston Golf Club in August, traditionally they congregate at the home of their president for the annual American supper.

Rose Gilbert played host this year to the members, who arrived armed with a selection of dishes, which would have graced any restaurant menu and which were enjoyed by the ladies.

Regular monthly meetings resume on September 1 at 7.30pm.

If you are interested in joining us and would like more information, please contact our secretary Sheila Harding on 01934 637727.

Weston Woodturning Circle

The meeting today (Thursday) at Weston AFC, 7pm will see international woodturner maker and designer Mark Hancock demonstrate this craft; this is one not to miss.

Offset designed items are the subject of this month’s display table.

The club would like to thank those people who visited our stall last Saturday at Weston Flower Show and through donations and the sale of woodturned and woodcraft items we raised £340 on behalf of the Young Carers charity.

Visitors are welcome to join us by just turning up on the night.

Alternatively, for more information, call John on 01934 510862.

Weston Archaeological and Natural History Society

We are looking forward to starting the new programme of talks for 2016/2017 after the summer break and seeing our members again.

The first talk of the new programme is the Newport medieval ship and will be held on September 13 at 7.30pm in Victoria Methodist Church Hall.

New members and visitors are welcome, with a fee of £2.50 for visitors.
