WESTON’S first round FA Cup tie, due to go ahead this afternoon (Saturday), has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Seagulls were due to take on League One Doncaster Rovers in the town at 3pm but the game was called off by referee Tim Robinson.

The pitch at the Woodspring Stadium was deemed unplayable due to the heavy rain which fell yesterday and this morning.

Referee Tim Robinson had concerns that a part of the penalty area at the NK Stand end was not fit to play, and eventually called the match off 20 minutes before it was due to kick-off.

Weston manager Mickey Bell said: “It’s heartbreaking.

“It’s obviously for health and safety reasons and I can see it from the referee’s point of view because if anyone gets injured it’s his responsibility.

“But on our side we have had people working 24/7 to make this fixture a success and we have got a ground full of people wanting to see the match.

“Their team have been down since yesterday and their fans have come a long way - they are understandably upset.”

The game, which sold thousands of tickets, will be rearranged.

Anger from some Doncaster fans spilled over after the announcement, with stewards and police having to step in.

Despite the huge disappointment, Weston did take centre stage at lunchtime when on Football Focus with Dan Walker, Mark Lawrenson and Jason Roberts.

And the re-arrangement will mean Weston will go into the hat for the second round draw on Monday.

Keep checking the Mercury website for more updates and an interview with Dan Walker will be posted online later.
