POLICE are urging villagers to be on their guard after a spate of burglaries in the region.
Seven properties have been burgled since the beginning of the year in West Huntspill, Axbridge and Berrow, with police believing that the incidents are connected.
Properties in Berrow and West Huntspill were broken into in the early evening of January 6, with a further three homes in West Huntspill and two in Axbridge burgled on January 12.
Avon and Somerset Police say they have been surprised by the number of incidents, in which cash and jewellery have been targeted, after only 63 were recorded across the Burnham and Cheddar areas in the whole of 2010.
Inspector Roger Tolley said: “If you see anything untoward or suspicious in your community, don’t hesitate to contact the police on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 1000.
“Residents can help to protect themselves by buying a timer for the lamps and lights in their homes, which are inexpensive and will make it look as though someone is in.”
