AN EXTREME sports fan has returned from the lofty heights of Mount Everest - where he played bingo.

Peter Hughes, of Weston, trekked 17,600ft up to the base camp of the world's largest mountain, dabber in hand, to smash the record for the world's highest game of bingo.

The 29-year-old who works for Gala Coral, in Bristol, took part in the Everest Base Camp Trek with 23 colleagues from all over the country, to raise funds for Sue Ryder Care.

The intrepid trekkers faced dehydration, altitude sickness and deep vein thrombosis as well as frostbite in the 17-day challenge.

Peter, who reviews extreme sports as part of the SolSteerin.com team, had been looking to do something life changing before his 30th birthday this month.

Training for the challenge included eight months of hitting the gym and trekking in the Lake District.

He also ran the Bristol Half Marathon to help with fund-raising.

He had already raised 4,000 for the charity before the latest challenge.

He said: "It was awesome.

"I loved every single minute of it and it was definitely worthwhile going because of all the money we raised."

The team will hand over 100,000 to the charity, which cares for people living with conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis, stroke and Huntington's Disease.

The trek was one of a number of ongoing initiatives by the company in a bid to raise 1million by 2010.
