A SCHOOLBOY error has left egg on the faces of council workers after angry residents complained of spelling inconsistencies on road signs in Worle.

Venting their irritation online, locals were left 'baffled' as to how North Somerset Council could misspell at least five place names in town.

The gaffes include Queen's Way which is spelt three separate ways all at the same roundabout and across the street from each other.

Also in Worle is Austen Drive that's spelt with both an E and an I just a few hundred yards apart, while one T is displayed on a Becket Road sign but it has two on another.

"I noticed the Becket - or Beckett - signs years ago as I turn into it most days," said a frustrated resident who complained the errors have made it 'difficult to give directions'.

"I found it quite funny and put a photo on my Facebook profile, and a friend told me that Queensway also showed as Queen’s Way - so I went and had look.

"I then realised there were three spellings all at the same roundabout - Queens Way being the third variation.

"So I started paying more attention to signs and noticed there were more and more mistakes.

"Many find it hilarious, and typical of our council, whereas some think it’s total incompetence, and don’t see the funny side at all."

Ryecroft Avenue is also spelt with and without an E on Nutwell Road.

The council's executive member for highways, Cllr Steve Hogg, praised 'the extremely observant resident' who noticed the errors.

He said: "It's a case of human error that has crept into our street names over a period of time. Although perhaps not the most pressing issue right now, it's regrettable and I am keen that we put it right.

"People can see plenty of similar mistakes made by local authorities over the years, so whilst this is a bit embarrassing, I think we are in pretty good company.

"It is regrettable, a bit embarrassing, maybe even amusing, but hopefully not too catastrophic - and easily resolved."

North Somerset Council says it is 'aware' of the misspelling and is working to rectify the issue.

A spokesperson added: "We're checking the correct spellings and if any signs need to be altered, we will raise this issue with our contractors.

"Should anyone like to report any issues to us, they can do so on our website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/do-it-online/report-or-request-services or by calling us on 01934 888 88."

On the typo fiasco, a resident said online: "Sums the council up in one word - which is unprintable!"
