WESTON is set to see the removal of 14 National Grid electricity pylons.

The installation of underground cables mean that now the structures are redundant and have little use.

The pylons have stood for more than 90 years, but are expected to be dismantled from February 27.

It is thought that it could take over a month to completely remove the pylons, their foundations and cables, which stretch from west of Bridgwater Road to National Grid's substation at Warne Road.

The work is due to be finished by the end of March.

National Grid project engineer Ben Thorne said: “These works will not only improve the skyline of residential areas, but removing the pylons will enhance the stability of our network and mean it can handle the increasing demand for low carbon technologies, such as electric cars and heat pumps.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused during the course of these essential works.

"The removal of these towers is the final step in replacing the existing pylon line originally constructed in 1930 with an underground cable.

"This will future-proof supplies for residents and businesses in the area.”

Travel delays are likely as there will be road and footpath closures and parking restrictions. Residents are urged to be aware of the following:

  • February 27 – Traffic lights on Uphill Road South.
  • March 4 to 6 – Closures on Loxton Road and Westbury Crescent (Williton Crescent end). Stop/go boards at Williton Crescent.
  • March 6 to 7 – Traffic lights on Loxton Road.
  • March 6 – Stop/go boards on Coleridge Road between Tennyson Road and Kingsley Road.
  • March 7– Stop/go boards on Chaucer Road between Tennyson Road and Windmill Crescent.
  • March 8 – Stop/go boards on Thirlmere Road.
