WORKERS have taken down the Odeon sign after the cinema closed for good in Weston-super-Mare.

The cinema closed down on Monday, June 5 and this photograph, taken by a reader of the Mercury, shows workers taking down the Odeon branding after the closure.

In an email written to members, a spokesperson from the cinema chain writes: "We are sorry to announce that, following a thorough assessment of all available options, we have made the very difficult decision to close ODEON Weston-super-Mare on June 5, as it is no longer viable to operate the cinema.”

Residents have had their say and shared their ideas on what they would do with the building once the closure was announced.

A petition has now been launched by a Weston resident to support the creation of a community space in the building that used to host the Odeon Cinema.

So far, more than 400 residents have signed the petition.
